If you’re a Canadian company trying to hire talent in 2026, you’re experiencing the challenging labour market first hand. Companies are struggling to plug the gaps in their organizations, creating overworked and burnt out employees. And despite the new prominence of AI, finding and hiring great people is still as tough as always.

In this article, we’re sharing some tips for hiring in this tricky Canadian labour market. But first, what’s making hiring such a challenge?

Hiring Hurdles in 2026

Here are some of the challenges facing hiring managers and business owners right now:

Shortages and competition

Hiring specialized talent is always tough because there is and always will be competition. Highly skilled individuals are in demand, with the ability to walk into nearly any workplace of their choosing. As a result, roles go unfilled and other employees are left to pick up the slack.

The labour market outlook here in BC paints the same picture with tight competition and shortages of workers. With fewer young people entering the labour market and fewer immigrants, labour demand is expected to outpace labour supply over the next 10 years.

Tighter budgets

Companies across industries are feeling the budget squeeze, placing a whole new set of challenges onto the hiring and recruitment. The cost of operating a business are seemingly always on the rise, plus higher wages and tax burdens make things extra difficult. Then there’s the US tariffs, which have placed an extra hardship on businesses.

Low engagement and turnover

In 2026 more than ever, employees are looking for fulfilling work. Poor leadership and communication, along with lack of positive workplace culture is one of the fastest ways to lose the engagement of your people. They’ll look for work elsewhere if they’re feeling burnt out or unsupported by management.

Tips for Hiring in 2026

The labour market is competitive across the country – and especially in BC. Here are 5 tips for hiring right now:

Tell a meaningful story

A primary goal of your job description – regardless of industry, should be to tell a compelling story. That story should include the candidate you’re hoping to attract, while demonstrating the culture and values of your organization. Why should someone work for you? Pay and benefits are just a piece of the puzzle.

Don’t be afraid to share the nitty gritty details of the story of your organization. How it was started, how it is run and where it plans to go. Remember, today’s employees are looking for meaning, and your story will help them buy in.

Stack up the benefits

More attractive perks and benefits are a great way to attract new talent but also lure people from other companies with less to offer. Salary is still a big part of the equation, but additional compensation and benefits can be a tipping point.

According to the 2026 Canadian Salary Guide by Robert Half, workers reported they’d switch employers for these perks (provided their base salary remains the same):

  • Better work-life balance, including hybrid work: 52%
  • Other financial benefits like bonuses: 51%
  • Better retirement benefits: 43%
  • Health and wellness programs: 39%

Also consider that 31% of companies offer some kind of bonus these days, whether it’s based on performance, retention, referrals for recruiting or signing bonus. What can your business offer to entice the next wave of top talent?

Recognize the limitations of AI

AI has become a foundational part of hiring and recruiting in 2026. According to the World Economic Forum, more than 90% of employers use some form of automated system to filter or rank job applications, and 88% are using AI for initial job screenings.

The challenge lies in recognizing the limitations of AI, and realizing that the actual quality of candidates of has not improved (even though their applications may have). Applicants have similar use of AI, which allows them to create more polished applications and automatically apply for numerous jobs.

With the rise of AI, employers will have to look beyond the credentials in applications. Instead, more focus will need to be placed on skills, values and attitudes.

Focus on the candidate experience

The skilled job seekers of today have options. If they feel like the hiring process is lacking, they’ll abandon a job opening altogether. The candidate experience is a valuable first impression with potential hires, which includes the application and interview process. For job seekers, this experience is a window into a company’s culture.

An optimized candidate experience is simple, transparent and personalized. The last thing you want is for a candidate waiting on you to follow up or move the process along. If they feel neglected or become frustrated, they might bail.

If you’ve identified a top candidate that looks like a front runner for an open position, one of the best things you can do in 2026 is act fast. The best candidates are not available for long. A process that drags on without updates or expectations it the easiest to walk out on.

Without skipping steps in your hiring process, focus on streamlining your hiring process and keeping it moving. If you can, shrink your interview panel and set up interviews back-to-back to save time.

From your first interaction with a candidate, do what you can to provide clear and accurate timelines. They should know exactly when each stage in the process is taking place. These expectations will help keep your candidates engaged without leaving them hanging or keeping them waiting.
