THE ROLE
Our client is a growing organization in the construction and real estate industry, looking to enhance its accounting systems and processes. The Senior Accountant will provide support for full-cycle accounting and project accounting, overseeing a wide range of tasks including, but not limited to, preparing monthly and annual financial statements, managing accounts payable, customer billing and accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, GST filings, payroll, and conducting financial analysis.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable teams, providing leadership, training, and development.
- Prepare monthly and annual financial statements.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare working papers, identifying necessary adjustments.
- Conduct weekly bank reconciliations and ensure timely filing of GST returns and payroll source deductions.
- Review bi-weekly payroll for both hourly and salaried employees.
- Maintain and update the chart of accounts, general ledger, sub-ledgers, and manage inter-company reconciliations.
- Manage the financial close process, ensuring accurate data recording, reviewing journal entries, and preparing account balance reconciliations.
- Lead the budgeting and forecasting process for new projects and acquisitions.
- Analyze and review financial reports to ensure accuracy and provide insights.
- Prepare corporate income tax filings.
- Develop and update project cash flow forecasts on a monthly basis, incorporating changes in estimates and schedules.
- Manage and maintain corporate cash flow.
- Assist in preparing annual budgets for income-producing properties (commercial and residential).
- Prepare and analyze job cost reports and review customer billing invoices monthly.
- Handle various other project-related accounting tasks as needed.
- Prepare monthly loan progress draws, including required supporting documentation.
- Recommend internal controls and improvements for budget accounting, cash flow management, credit management, accounts payable, purchase orders, and other accounting processes.
- Lead process improvements and provide insights for decision-making based on accounting policies.
- Build relationships with stakeholders and address complex, unstructured problems.
- Analyze financial reports and data to provide valuable information to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with external accountants and other professionals as required.
- Perform additional tasks as directed by management.
Requirements:
- Experience in job costing and the construction/development industry is essential.
- At least 5 years of experience in project accounting, full-cycle accounting, and job costing, particularly within a construction or real estate development company.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA enrollment is required, with preference given to candidates close to completing their certification.
- Strong leadership and self-motivation, with a commitment to supporting team growth and company success.
- A hands-on approach to accounting, with a focus on mentoring and developing accounting staff.
- Experience with Sage Accounting Software or other ERP systems is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and time management skills.
